Here’s Drew Johnson’s take on what happened yesterday.

***UPDATE***

Did anyone just hear Kent Williams say into the microphone, without knowing it was on, “Good thing I have thick skin.”?

Then, after a confrontation with a Republican member of the house, just after a recess was called, he sat back down and said, “I can see this ain’t gonna be easy.”

Radio (And Speaker of the House) 101: Know when your mic is HOT!

Kent Williams, a Republican, promised to vote for a Republican Speaker of the House. No one thought that it would be himself. He just won the Speaker position over Jason Mumpower. The TN House looks like the British House of Commons. He just stole away the first ever Republican majority. You can watch the session here and we’ll have video of the vote asap. Stay tuned for Drew Johnson either Wednesday or Thursday to give us the inside scoop on what happened and what this means.

From Robin Smith, chairwoman of the TN GOP:

“Kent Williams has betrayed his constituents and the people of Carter County in breaking his pledge – his signed oath – to vote for the nominee of the Republican caucus for Speaker of the House. He lied, in a quest for personal power, in league with Democrat Speaker Jimmy Naifeh and House Minority Leader Gary Odom, in their desire to retain power despite the results of the 2008 elections.”

Back in November, WIlliams said he would vote for Mumpower:

“I want to state today, unequivocally, that I pledge to vote for a Republican for Speaker of the House. I have every reason to expect that the Republican nominee will be Leader Jason Mumpower.”

Umm, sort of.

***UPDATE***

But he did pledge to vote for Republican officers, and he voted for Lois DeBerry (Democrat) for Speaker Pro Tem.

Special thanks to AC Kleinheider, all the Tennessee bloggers and everyone on Twitter keeping us up on the latest at the State House. New media in action!
